Welcome to Almaden Preparatory School's Premier Summer School Extravaganza!
 
Summer School 2008
 
  Once again this year, we are proud to present a program featuring a combination of learning and fun!

We are promoting an environment that continues to develop a passion for learning, while including the art of creativity,
fun, and adventure. Afternoons include exploring international countries and their customs through hands on experience.

Every activity has been carefully planned to enhance both mind and spirit. Come join in the fun, as we embark on a very unique summer adventure, that you will not want to miss!

Attached to our application, you will find our "Summer Schedule of Classes". Please choose, where indicated, the weeks
that you would like to attend. Spaces are available, but may be limited due to the subject of the class. Class sizes will
vary between 10 and 12 students per class.

 Summer School Course Descriptions

Learn the Secrets of Agent 007 –  Learn all about the creative tools and tricks of  spies and detectives.  This is a fun and
                                                      fascination class to take! (# 59)

Super Heroes- Create your own super hero!  Give your super hero super powers, villains and a cool look!  (#24, 6)

Be a Chef for a Week! – “ Thyme” to salt and pepper your summer days with an appetizing menu.  You will plan, bake,
                                     prepare and enjoy meals! Yum! (#6, 15, 20, 35, 45, 54, 64)

Become a Chocolatier! – Learn to create sweet delicious filled chocolates, colorful lollipops and old time favorites.  Take
                                      home a box of your own creations to share! (#26, 50)

Robotics Programming – Try your hand at building a robot with Legos.  All you need is your imagination and ingenuity!
                                       Learn the software that controls your robot. (#1, 40)

Photography – Learn to take photos, upload, organize, and edit them using various applications including Photo Shop.

Gardening- Grow it, eat it, and draw it.  We will grow sprouts, art with vegetables, and eating the fruits of our labor!

Drama, Art & Music

 

Become a Glass Painter- This class will teach you how to etch and paint different glass objects.  Only your imagination
                                     will limit you! (# 11, 65)

Candle Making- We will make our own candle using wax, gel, shells, ice and more.  Take home these wonderful smelling
                         creations! (#31)

Goop it Up! - Make several different objects from paper mache.  Design and paint your own works of art! (# 36)

Mosaic Design- Create beautiful pieces using several different media.  (# 5, 44)

Screen Printing- Learn to screen different designs onto a variety of paper and fabric. (#14, 53)

Pipe Cleaner Creations- Make your own collection on pipe cleaner critters! (#7)

Puppetry- Create your own puppets using felt, fabric, socks and more!  Let your imagination soar! (#58)

Dragonology – Study dragons and their origins.  Draw, paint and create your own! (#29, 68)

Bound to be a Star! – Do you have a natural performer, or a child who loves to “make believe”?  This class will instill your
                                  student with a love of theater and appreciation for the play, as an art form.  With exciting plays,
                                  costume creations, and theater direction, we will create confident and creative young actors!

Become the next American Idol! – Sing, dance, act! Audition your way to the top!  Test your singing skills and perform
                                                     for the judges.  Work your way up the ladder of talent! (#3, 42)

Fimo Fun – This class will teach you how to sculpt different animals, figures, and more!  Let your imagination soar with
                 creativity! Take home your creations to enjoy! (#39, 73)

 Magic- Abracadabra!  - Entertain your friends with a variety of magic tricks that you will master! (#30, 74)

Beginning Piano – Enjoy an introduction to piano keyboarding.  We will learn the basics and play simple tunes.
                            (#37, 76)

Comic Creations – Design your own comic book with illustrations and text!  Let your imagination run wild! (#34)

Pottery – Manipulate clay into bowls, vases, plates and more.  Paint your masterpieces! (#19)

Potential Cartoonist – Enjoy drawing your favorite Disney or Pixar characters!  Who knows?  You, too, could be
                                   INCREDIBLE!

Be Crafty! – We will focus on making various holiday arts and crafts and by the end of the week, each student will be
                   able to take home their own projects! (#17, 56)

Accessories that Sparkle! – Learn to create wonderful necklaces, bracelets, hairpieces and more embellished with
                                          beads and trinkets!  Let your imagination soar! (#27, 66)

 

Sports & Games

 

Survivor Challenge- This exciting interactive class encourages kids to summon their strength, wit, perseverance and
                               teamwork to solve and complete physical and mental challenges.  The only opponent is your mind,
                               the only limits to fun- your heart
. (#10, 49)

 Games Week –The students will have various options in the room, from simple board games; like checkers to more complex
                       games, like Stratego, Risk, backgammon and chess.  Card games will also be introduced for those interested
                       in becoming card sharks.  Games such as Hearts and Spades will be introduced for the older students, while
                       games like Go Fish and Crazy Eights will be offered for the younger ones. (#69)

 Got Game? – Shoot and score in this class.  You will learn the fundamental concepts of basketball, and start to learn offensive
                     and defensive team strategies.  You will have plenty of time to scrimmage and enjoy the social interaction!

 Go for the Goal! – Gear up!  This is a chance to learn some new moves and expand your soccer skills, both offensively and
                             defensively!  By the end of the week, you will have learned several different methods and tactics that
                             will enhance your play by 100%! (#21, 60)

Can You Dig It? – This camp is designed to develop and enhance volleyball skills.  Coach will work on rules, techniques,
                            drills and practice games. (#78)

Hit the Turf – Kick off your flag football season, brush up your skills for your upcoming season at Almaden Prep! (#70, 75)

 

Academics

 

Academic Review – An exciting look at a designated novel or daily reading assignment.  Activities centralize around the oral,
                             daily reading.  Students will work on decoding skills, reading with inflection and expression, details, main
                             ideas, and inference.  Learn context clues to enhance comprehension and build vocabulary.  Writing
                             assignments complement the reading and will boost your student’s comprehension.  Enhance your math
                             skills through educational learning games.  We will work on grade level material, basic facts and
                             computation.  We will work on clarification of concepts, and address word problems.

Learn from the Mad Scientist – What? How?  These are always the pre-cursors to questions in which science can answer
                                                with amazing results.  For one week, this class will conduct experiments and learn amazing
                                                facts, which will astound the imagination.  The students will conduct experiments, work
                                                as a team and learn by doing hands-on activities. (#25)

Science Exploration- Delve into the world of science by studying all there is to know about sharks, frogs, reptiles and
